The inaugural National Housing Symposium, underway in Lilongwe

The inaugural National Housing Symposium, underway in Lilongwe, comes at a critical time when Malawi seeks to transition to climate-resilient and affordable housing for everyone.

Informed by the unfortunate recent events of natural disasters that destroyed both private and public infrastructure, we are left with no choice but to standardise construction of houses to make them multi-hazard resilient.

Convened under the theme: ‘Sustainable and Affordable Housing in Pursuit of Malawi 2063’ the summit accords us a rare opportunity to exchange knowledge, adopt best practices and deploy modern innovations in providing affordable housing to every Malawian.

My administration – through the Malawi Housing Corporation – will continue promoting sustainable communities through affordable housing under an initiative called Project 250. This initiative will see construction of 250,000 houses in the next ten years and 500 of these houses are already underway.

All these efforts align with strategic frameworks such as Malawi 2063, the Malawi Implementation Plan 1 (MIP-1), the New Urban Agenda, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2020, and the Malawi Urban Agenda and an updated National Housing Policy.
