The 156-hectare Mlooka Solar-Powered Irrigation Scheme

All districts in the Eastern Region are earmarked for transformative development as outlined in the Malawi 2063 and its inaugural decade-long implementation plan, MIP-1.

Today in Zomba, I inspected the 156-hectare Mlooka Solar-Powered Irrigation Scheme which is empowering 720 smallholder farmers specialising in maize, rice and beans farming.

Together with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), my administration commenced construction of this scheme in 2022 to build resilience of small-scale farmers in terms of food security and sustainable income.

Thereafter, I visited Joho Trading Centre in Machinga District where I officially switched on lights under the Malawi Rural Electrification Program (MAREP) Phase 9. A total of 280 households around Joho will be connected to the national grid together with many more communities in eight other trading centres within Machinga.

MAREP 9 is in total targeting 460 trading centres. These interventions in the power sector fulfil my administration’s pledge to provide electricity to all Malawians by 2030.

Lastly, I inspected expansion works of Ntaja Health Centre, which we intend to upgrade to a fully-fledged rural hospital.
